A new Enfin restaurant has opened in the city of Barre in northeastern France. The establishment is located in a house with a history – an old carpentry workshop built in the middle of the 19th century. Architects from the Strasbourg studio Nara adapted the historic building to a new life.

“Our main goal was to show the beauty of the original building, its architectural volume and expressive materials,” the authors say. This desire has led to the layout of the restaurant, which involves maintaining an open space, almost completely devoid of partitions. In the center of the hall, the architects placed an open kitchen, which they decided to zone with the help of a laconic counter decorated with dark glossy tiles. Its U-shape is repeated by a hanging element, disguised with mirrored panels. Does not clutter up the interior of a small restaurant and the area at the entrance. To separate it from the dining room without resorting to additional structures, the architects used one-color floor-length curtains, mounted on a ring-shaped rail and successfully concealing the door.

The main decoration of the restaurant is the old wooden ceiling, restored by architects. They deliberately left in sight all the design features: the longitudinal and transverse beams and thin metal columns supporting them. The authors covered the stone walls of the building with white plaster and only then placed a minimalist filling inside the historical interior. To emphasize the contrast between old and new, they used light gray felt wall panels (matching the carpet on the floor) that encircle the room around the perimeter. Laconic light wood furniture helps maintain a sense of airiness, while tiled surfaces serve as color accents, the regularity of which is contrasted with the rustic irregularities of the ceiling.
